Meeting Mortality

The pager can and will go off on an on call shift. And, every time it does, my heart drops -- not because I have to peel myself out of bed or fake looking professional in a matter of moments. But, because it reminds me that someone, somewhere is suffering. While I know that people suffer daily, never before have I been able to hold their suffering so tangibly. Never before has the veil between life and death seemed so fragile. Never before have I had to question my own mortality.
